Egg Drop Competition

Egg drop competition

Year 5-8

The goal of the competition is to create the lightest, smallest egg-cradling device capable of protecting an uncooked, small egg during a single-storey fall.

The event will be held at 12.45pm on Monday 19^th June outside Rm 13

Egg drop rules.

·       Nothing can be permanently attached to the egg.

·       Your container must be in free fall during the drop. No bungee cords.

·       Your Egg must not be cooked or coated with any material.

·       No parachutes, wings or lighter than air substances are permissible.

·       Your container should be made predominantly of recycled materials.

·       No commercial packaging materials are permitted to be used including bubble-wrap, egg cartons. Cotton balls, babies nappies and Styrofoam.

·       No liquids or food substances are permitted

·       Volume will be calculated based on one of four shapes (sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism (box) or pyramid. Inside air volume will not be subtracted out. Shape dimensions and volume shall be noted on your device in centimetres cubed. If you have any difficulties in calculating volume please see Mr Roberts

·       The mass of your device (in grams) should also be recorded on your device.

·       In the event of more than one successful drop the winner will be decided by the lowest score based on the following formula: Volume (in cubic centimetres) x twice the mass (in grams).

A - Claire’s mum wants to paint the kitchen using a nice, blue paint, which costs $35 per litre. The room is about 6m x 8.5m with a 2.7m stud. Claire’s mum figures that about 8.5m2 of space is taken up by windows and doorways. Each litre of paint will cover approximately 8m2 of wall. How many litres will she need to paint the kitchen and how much will the paint cost?
B - Claire’s dad also wants to paint the kitchen, and he likes Mum’s paint choice, BUT he wants to put wood paneling on the bottom half of the walls. How many square metres of wood will he need AND how many fewer litres of paint would the family need if they went with Dad’s idea?
C - The wood panels are sold by the lineal metre. They are $13.50/lm and they are 200mm wide. What will the cost of the wood be if the family go with Dad’s design?
D - Whose design is the cheapest and by how much?

Bake Sale - Tuesday 16th May

Room 18 and 19 students Emily, Ruby, Isabella S. Charlie and John have put together a bake sale and lollie jar for Tuesday 16th May.  For the Junior school they are hoping to be able to sell their cakes etc outside the junior sports shed from 12.30pm to 12.45pm. Then they will sell the remainder at 12.45pm by the blue container.

 All of the proceeds from their inquiry project will be donated to Starship.
