Student Teacher from UC - Week 8 & 9

Earlier this week we met Tessa Pearce who is going to be on university placement with us for the next 2 weeks.  She will spend a further 4 weeks with us in Term 4.  She has written a wee introduction for parents and students:

Hi everyone!

My name is Tessa Pearce and I will be in Room 18 for the next couple of weeks as a student teacher from the University of Canterbury. 

Last year I graduated from Darfield High School and I have grown up in the Darfield area. My family own a sheep farm just out of Darfield and I always enjoy going home when I get a break from study. I am a keen Crusaders and All Blacks fan and I love sitting down to read a good book.

For this placement I am keen to be in a classroom and see it from a teacher’s perspective rather than a student. I am excited to see the short film that you have been working so hard on and listening to the last round of oral presentations.

I am really looking forward to getting to know you all and finding out about your interests.

Current Events Learning

Today we read about the 52 year old German man who is stuck in a cave.  We discussed some of the difficulties that rescuers may experience and the pros and cons of a rescue operation of this scale.  Parents, you may wish to discuss your opinions on this topic with your child.  Here are the videos links that we couldn't watch today:

Oral Language Reminder

Next week is our fourth and final round of oral language for Term 2.  So far, we have thoroughly enjoyed the creativity with which students have presented their speeches. 

Remember, the purpose is to both inform and entertain!  

For this round, students are to choose their own actor, actress, film director etc. to focus their speech on.  The criteria remains the same (each student has a copy of the rubric in their Portfolio).

I look forward to seeing what students bring next week.  Who has the WOW factor?

This week, TRIPLE or NOTHING!  This week the stakes are higher.  You'll earn triple the stamps for completing all of your measurement activities on Mathletics this week.  Remember, as we near the end of term, you want to be earning as many stamps as possible so that you can truly enjoy our end of term celebrations.  So... get busy people!

Filming is Complete

Without giving too much away, filming is now complete for our Room 18 short film.  We are super excited with the results so far!  Our Master Editors (Ben H., Jonas, Jack and Emily) will spend the week making the final touches.  They will work together to add smooth transitions between the scenes and will look at adding sound effects that add to the comedic mood of the film.

Such a proud teacher!

I can't wait to see it on the big scene in Week 9.

Week 6 Reminders

Reminder:

This week we have swimming again - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Students are to bring: togs, towel, goggles, hair brush, drink bottle and a snack in a separate swimming bag.

It is also an oral language week.  Students will be presenting their 3rd round of speeches. :)

Remember, each Sunday evening I set 7-8 Mathletics tasks for the week.  It is important that students are practicing the skills that are learned in class.   At the moment, we are focusing on measurement activities - in particular, perimeter, area and volume.  Please encourage your children to log on each week to complete the practice activities.
