Senior Interchange - Visual Arts

The Student Curriculum Team decided that they'd like to explore face painting for the visual arts component of Senior Interchange.  Room 18 started today with some cool results.  Check out how well they did!

Visual Arts - Face Painting

Learning Outcomes - Students will:

• Investigate the purpose of face painting in different cultures
• Look at how other artists have used their face, or others’ faces, as a canvas for self expression
• Develop and revisit visual ideas for their own artwork
• Explore and describe ways in which meanings can be communicated and interpreted in their own and others’ work
• Use Bloom’s 6 Thinking Hats to reflect on processes and next steps

Pacific Island Masks

MATERIALS FOR MASKS
 Students are reminded to bring the extras that they need for their Pacific Island masks, e.g. feathers, shells, wool, wood shavings, leather, beads, buttons, flax, straw etc.  We are hoping to have these completed by the end of Week 4 so that we can focus on our inquiry investigations after camp. 
Also, think about how you are going to give your masks features such as nose, ears, mouth etc.  These 3D features will need to be added before paint is applied.

Why so much destruction?

Why so much destruction,
Do we need to kill so bad.
We take away others lives,
It's all they ever had.

Fighter jets, machine guns,
All made to kill each other.
While that money could be spent,
To stop someone losing a brother.

Starvation and poverty,

Kia Ora 2015!

Kia ora whānau and tamariki!

First and foremost, Jarad and I would like to warmly welcome those who are new to our Year 7/8 syndicate and Rooms 18/19.  Secondly, we need to say how excited we are to have some amazing students returning for a second year!

Now, for some house keeping.  You will notice on the right hand side of the homepage, that we have added Term 1 dates/events.  It is our intention to update this regularly as new events come to light - so please check for updates periodically.

One of our first major events for the term is camp, which is scheduled for Week 5 of term.  Camp notices will be coming home on Monday 2nd Feb.  It's important that all notices are returned by Monday 9th Feb so that we can finalise the programme.  We will need at least 3 parents per class, so please consider your availability between 2nd-4th March.  It's sure to be a 2015 highlight for the kids (if not for the adults also)!

Term Costs and Local Area Permissions will be sent home on Monday 2nd Feb.  Please return this ASAP.  Term 1 is the most expensive term in our syndicate because of camp and technology fees.  We try to keep the other 3 terms to a minimum because of this.  

Thanks for ensuring that students were able to start the year off on the right foot by having all stationery sorted by the first day of school.  It was great to see such organisation!  Students will have hopefully spoken to parents about their new Ako Folder (Home Learning) and shown you their new student diary.  It is our goal to have every student select at least one Home Learning category that they are going to work on throughout the term, subsequently, earning a Success Award badge for that category.  There will be some Ako Time scheduled into the programme, so it's important that students are keeping their Ako Folders in their bag, therefore enabling them to work on their projects at both home and school.  Student diaries should similarly travel to and from school each day.  Home Learning projects and weekly assignments can be recorded in their diary, along with important term dates and communication between teachers and parents.

Our Meet the Teacher Evening is penciled in for Tuesday 10th Feb.  This is a time where Jarad and I will explain our collaborative environment and how it works in the Year 7/8s.  Keep an eye out for further information.  Goal Setting Conferences follow soon after in Week 4.  It's important that you take these opportunities to be involved in your child's education because we greatly appreciate the support and contribution (as do your children)!
