MAGGI Kitchen Showdown

Now in its 6th year, the popular MAGGI Kitchen Showdown is back again to encourage kids to get into the kitchen and create!  Partnering with The 4.30 Show, kids aged 11-15 are challenged with cooking a nutritious and balanced main course meal that will feed a family of four.  The meal must be created for no more than $20 and use a MAGGI product, selected from a from list of participating products.  Entries are open now, with $5000 up for grabs for the winning team’s school, as well as prizes for members of selected teams featured during the competition.

Applications to participate open on Monday 13 April 2015 and close at 11.59pm on Friday 19 June 2015.

Each week for 8 weeks, commencing Monday 25 May 2015 a Team will be chosen to have their recipe featured on the 4:30 TV Show.  Each Team Member whose recipe is featured on the TV show will be awarded a $50 Rebel Sport Gift Voucher.

It feels pretty good to be a learner!

 Today I completed my first Te Reo Māori module through Core Education.  YAY!

It feels awesome to have started this learning journey and I look forward to continuing to learn alongside students in the class.  One of the Home Learning challenges for Term 2 is to learn an opening karakia (and as an extra challenge, a closing karakia).  

As a group, we have recently been practising the opening karakia each morning.  Holly R. has done a fabulous job memorising the opening karakia already.  Hōtō (choice)!  Keep practising at home koutou!

Vanuatu Book Drive

Friends of Ms McGowan are traveling to Vanuatu in 3 weeks and are wanting to take some children's books with them to donate to a school.

If you have any new or good condition books that would suit whole class reading to 5-9 year olds, please bring them in by Wednesday of next week.  If you stick a photo or name of who the book is from in front of the book, they will respond to you.

The travellers have allocated 3kg of their luggage to books, so please don't send along boxes full! :)

We achieved our goal!  

We managed to raise the $1500 needed for a water pump in Vanuatu.  Well done Year 7/8!  Thanks to all the special helpers at home who helped with the baking and craft creations.  Your help was very much appreciated!

Term 2 Home Learning and Reading P.O.C. Programme

A new tab has been added with the Home Learning Challenges for Term 2 (above).  A printed copy will be given to students on Tuesday.  Remember, completing 3 tasks from a category leads to Senior Success Award eligibility.

Further to this, we are starting a new Reading Point of Challenge (P.O.C.) Programme which can be found under the Reading tab above.  Thanks Lily S. for initiating the idea!  We have Bob, from Bob's Books, talking to us on Tuesday about a range of books for this age group.  We can't wait to get started.

Year 7/8 Market Day

Hopefully your child has mentioned to you about our big event next week!  The Year 7/8's are in the process of organising an island themed market day to raise money for a much needed water tank in Vanuatu.  Following a guest speaker's presentation early in Term 1 (a representative from Unicef), the Student Curriculum Team decided that we'd like to work towards funding a water tank for a village on Tanna Island.  So here's what we know...

The Current Situation

• Water is carried up from deep ravine floor to villages, often 4 times per day (and up to 5 hours per day).

•“Bush Toilets” are used predominantly

• No hand washing as water is in short supply

• Water used for drinking and cooking only

• Low levels of sanitation and hygiene

• High rates of illness such as diarrhoea and skin conditions, especially for children

Solution 

- Pump water up to tanks in village using ram pumps – no fuel required (target = $1500)

• Improve access to water and toilets

• Water pumped up to villages using pumps designed by Kiwi engineer

• Training on hygiene (e.g. hand washing and food preparation) and water use / management

• Training on water system maintenance

- Tank at high point of village feeds water to tap stands by gravity

• Toilets upgraded to VIP – Ventilation Improved Pit latrine 

• More hygienic

Room 18 & 19 has been given the task of preparing and selling foods and drinks for Market Day-

things such as cupcakes, muffins, cups of Raro... etc. 

Students have worked together in groups to develop their ideas and have delegated jobs

that need to get done over the weekend.  If you have any questions regarding this, please email Mr or
