Can Day

On Tuesday 12th of April was the Can Day. We had an amazing amount of cans donated, the total was 565!

We used all the cans to spell the word HOPE! On the courts.

All these cans went to the Christchurch Resettlement Services.

Thanks to everyone who brought along a can!

An evening with foreign correspondent Rachel Smalley - World Vision invitation

Here's an email from Harley at World Vision with an exciting invitation...

Good afternoon all,

I’d like to extend a warm invite to you and your students to– Syria: Five Years Too Long –The Forgotten Millions next Friday, 8 April, 7pm at Charles Luney Auditorium at St Margaret’s College.

This is an open invite. Yourself, staff, students, and parents are all welcome to join us next Friday.  I have attached a poster that you might consider sharing with the school, or placing in a newsletter. I thought that this could be something further to help with some of your students inquiries! J

Please see below for the details.

Join foreign correspondent Rachel Smalley, a Christchurch native, and a journalist who has witnessed first-hand the effects of the war, in an evening to connect the Christchurch earthquake to the Syria Crisis 5 years on.

In Syria, nearly 300,000 people have been killed in a war that appears to have no end. Millions have fled the country in what is the greatest humanitarian crisis of a generation. Millions more have been displaced inside Syria.

In Christchurch 185 were killed, and the city is still recovering. Homes were destroyed, and lives uplifted.

Journalist Rachel Smalley travelled to Lebanon, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan and the refugee trail through Eastern Europe with World Vision. There she met the victims of this crisis, families fleeing a country they loved to survive. A Christchurch local, she has seen her city shaken to its core.

You are invited to hear Rachel’s first hand stories from families desperate to return to Syria, a home they long for and are strongly rooted to, and from her encounters with children who are slowly forgetting what it means to be Syrian as they grow up in desperate situations as refugees. You will learn how you can help the people of Syria as the war continues into its sixth year.

The evening will also feature World Vision’s virtual reality experience, that allows you to walk in the shoes of a refugee family and experience what life is like for those living in a makeshift camp in Lebanon.

Some nibbles and soft drinks will be provided after the event.
Please RSVP to RSVP@worldvision.org.nz but feel free to bring friends and family along on the night.

Some Recent Writing

-->
Recently we looked at the witches spell from Shakespeare's Macbeth and modeled out writing from it.

 Clash, clatter, crash and crave.
It will lead you to your grave.

Many person’s fingernails,
A few too many pots and pails.
Lots of limbs including feet,
And a bit of dragon meat.
Stinky ripped pants,
Crawling with ants.
A bloody knife,
That took a life.
With a battered briefcase.

Clash, clatter, crash and crave.
It will lead you to your grave.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Skull and shell of a shameful snail,

Ears of an eradicating elephant male,

Cape of a curious cat,

Bones of a brazen bat,

Eyes of an elegant eel,

Shoulders of a serene seal.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Beat blend, mix and tease
Stir with the slightest of ease:

Bubbling, boiling, blending well
Try to ignore the ghastly smell.

Legs, arms, feet and brains,
Made to cause so much pain,

Stinky socks with lava rocks
And a hippie’s old dreadlocks,

Thorns and thistles
And a old mans whistle.

Beat blend mix and tease
Stir with the slightest of ease.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Frogs eyes and witches toes,
Bird’s wings and a garden hoes;
An elephant’s ear and a strand of hair,
A gorilla’s chest and a bottle of bear,
And magical mice as nice as rice,
Soggy sandwiches and sassy slice.

Double, trouble toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

-->
Burn, Burn twist and turn,
Ghastly creatures ready to churn.

Eye of a Grimalkin, hair of a hobbit,
Wart off a witch’s nose and a sneer from a Boggit,
The blood from a dragon and slime from a snail,
Ear from a rotten mouse and puppy dog’s tail,
Airy earthlings eating this stew, with old pigeon eggs ew, ew, ew!
This brew, this stew, deadly are few,
Better watch out or it’ll curse you!

Burn, Burn twist and turn,
Ghastly creatures ready to churn.
