JOHN R. ALLISON MEMORIAL ESSAY COMPETITION 2016
The Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association will again run an essay competition to stimulate interest amongst school children of primary school age about early Canterbury.
The winners over the last two years have been:
2014: Aurelia Wilberforce of Tai Tapu School.
2015: Connor Wilson of Hurunui College
PRIZES: A prize of $100 will be awarded to the winning essay each year with another $100 being awarded to the school the winning entrant attends.
ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to any Year 7 or 8 student living in Canterbury.
TOPIC: “What life was like for the early settlers in Canterbury”
GUIDELINES:
Entrants should imagine that they were a child living in Canterbury at some time during the first 20 years of the settlement of Canterbury (ie 1850-70)
Credit will be given to essays that:
* are well structured and well written
* accurately portray what living conditions were like in early Canterbury and what sort of activities people in early Canterbury became involved in.
Essays should be about 1000 words in length and no more than 1200 words. Entrants should add to the essay a bibliography, stating where they got their information from. They must include more than one source of information.
Essays should be forwarded, preferably in jpeg, by Friday 21 October 2016 to: peterkathywilliams17@xtra.co.nz
