Jaden and Theo handed over a cheque to the Westpac Helicopters today for a whooping $608.  Well done boys!  A special thanks must go to all of the wonderful helpers on the day of the sausage sizzle (including Jill, Leonie, Mr Rae and Miss Wood) and to all of the students who supported the cause by purchasing a sausage on the day.

You are invited to the Rotary Speech Competition

On Tuesday morning we had the syndicate speech competition.  One Year 7 and one Year 8 student represented each class.  Ben and Fergus did a fantastic job for Room 18.  

Ben spoke about the importance of imagination and compared it to knowledge.  He made reference to a number of famous Albert Einstein quotes that purport imagination as having greater importance.  Ben was imaginative, energetic and entertaining.  His enthusiasm in front of an audience was, in my mind, unsurpassed. 

Fergus opened our eyes to the horrors of 'not washing your hands after going to the toilet'.  His speech was both informative and humorous.  As the only boy in the Year 8 category, I personally believe he was a stand out! 

Congratulations must go to Lilly and Sophia of Room 23, who claimed both the Year 7 and Year 8 categories, and are therefore through to the Rotary Speech Competition.  

You are all invited to support Lilly and Sophia on the evening as they are representing our wonderful syndicate and our school! 

There are four other schools who are entering the competition: Beckhenham, Opawa, St Peters and Hillview.  It is sure to be a fantastic evening - showcasing some of our best up-and-coming local speakers.  

Jaden & Theo's Home Learning Community Project

Last Wednesday, all of Jaden and Theo's hard work paid off.  They were successful in organising a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Westpac Helicopters.  On the day, the boys were aided by a number of good friends who helped to make this project possible.  The project contributes towards the boys eligibility for a Community Senior Success Award.  Profits are yet to be finalised, but it is believed to be around $540.  Well done boys... the money is going to a worthy cause!

Aesop's Fables

This week we will be dissecting a number of Aesop's Fables and then writing our own. 

Who Was Aesop?
Aesop lived in Greece in the early sixth century.  A slave after having been captured in war, he achieved a reputation for the great wit he demonstrated while telling tales in discussion and negotiation.

The fables have come to be used for a variety of purposes (including artistic motivation/inspiration).  While Aesop used his fables to make witty points to solve problems and reveal human truths, over time many of the stories have been used to open up discussion about human behaviour, morals and values.

Sports Update

CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT
 
Congratulations to the Netball A, Rugby, Football A and Hockey A teams who placed in the top 2 at the Zone Tournament two weeks ago.  This means that they have qualified through to the Canterbury Tournament which is being held this Thursday, 29th August, 11-3pm.  Whānau and friends, please come along and support our teams on the day! :)

For the first time in several years, we entered one Year 7 and one Year 8 team into the Cantamath competition.

Both teams represented our school admirably - finishing the competition on 40 points each.  The excitement on the evening was electrifying!  If you missed the event this year, I strongly recommend attending next years event! 

I was so proud of the teamwork and composure demonstrated by the students.  Thanks must be given to Mr Roberts for heading the selection process and organising team practices.  Your dedication and commitment to student learning makes you an asset to our teaching team.
